#38. Some Say "Promiscuous" - Being Very Sexually Active

This Conversation Will Help You…

  1. Think about what it means to be “fast” or very sexually active
  2. Say reasons why a person might choose to be very sexually active
  3. Name personal values about sex and relationships

Think About This First

  •  The words "promiscuous," "fast," or "easy" are generally considered to be offensive terms, whereas terms like "stud" are generally considered positive terms for similar behavior. This conversation allows an opportunity to talk about different levels of sexual activity and reasons why someone might have a lot of sexual activity. We use the term "very sexually active" in this conversation to neutralize the language around this topic while still being clear about its meaning.

Having the Conversation

Start Here:

What does it mean to be “fast” or “promiscuous”?

Do people use these words, or do they say something else?

What would it mean to be “fast” or “easy”?

What kinds of behaviors would be considered “fast”?

Continue:

What are some reasons a person would choose to be very sexually active?

How do you think that their peers would react to this or treat them?

Would they be treated differently if they are very sexually active?

Do you think there are circumstances in which it is okay to be very sexually active?

What are those circumstances?

Do you think there are circumstances in which it’s not okay to be very sexually active? What are those?

Keep Talking:

What are stereotypes that exist about people who are considered very sexually active?

What basis do these stereotypes have in gender, sexual orientation, or race and ethnicity?

What are some risks of being very sexually active?

What are ways that a person who chooses to be very sexually active keep themselves safe?

Do you think that the choice to be very sexually active could be a positive choice, or negative choice?

What might let you know that it’s a negative choice?

What might let you know it’s a positive choice?

How is being “easy” or very sexually active talked about with people you know?

What are some ways that you think a friend’s behavior might influence their other friends’ behavior?

What are ways that your values are different from your friend’s values?

How does that end up looking in your friendship?
