#100. Using The Internet

This Conversation Will Help You…

  1. Say three ways people use the internet to meet others

  2. Understand the privacy policy of one of their favorite social networking sites

  3. Name three positive things and three negative things about using the internet to meet others

Think About This First

    •  There are lots of ways people interact with others online - the young person you talk to may know sites and ways of connecting that you haven't heard of before. They are experts in the digital realm and can share their knowledge.

    Having the Conversation

    Start here:

There are so many people on the internet - have you met other people through the internet?

How did that happen? There are dating sites and social media sites like Facebook, as well as online forums and video games.

Have you ever become acquainted with someone through a person that you already know? Some schools have pen pal projects that they do through the internet.

Do you think this is more similar or different than meeting someone in a chat room or online forum?

    What makes it different?

Is it always bad to meet people online?

What are some ways that feel okay?

    Continue:

How familiar do you feel like you are with the privacy policies of different social networking sites? How important is privacy to you on those sites?

Does it matter based on which one?

What are the things that make you consider the importance of customizing your profile privacy?

    Keep Talking:

What are some ways that meeting people online could be really great?

What are some ways that it could be really bad?

Is it pretty obvious which ways are good and which ones are bad?

    How do you know?

    What if it’s unclear?
